What is meplat trimming?
Meplat trimming is cutting a small portion of the tip of the bullet (the meplat) away. The reason for this is to remove the jagged edges that are left from the manufacturing process, and also to make all of the meplats a uniform diameter. By making the shape of the bullets more consistent, the aerodynamic drag (BC, or ballistic coefficient) of the bullets is more uniform. This means the bullets will impact the target at an elevation that is more consistent, yielding better accuracy.
How much will it help accuracy?
The greatest benefit to accuracy will come at the longer distances. Since the bullet’s time of flight is greater, there is more time for inconsistent BCs to influence the bullet’s flight. At ranges of 200 yards and less, there hasn’t been a lot of experimentation, and it is suggested that meplat trimming matters little. At 1000 yards, it has been established by the benchrest shooting community that uniform BCs are of great importance. The practical report of most Long Range Highpower shooters who trim is that the groups have fewer flyers.
Why is this meplat trimmer better than the other ones?
Our trimmer holds the bullet securely during the whole trimming operation. The bullet is properly aligned with the cutter so there is no chance of trimming the tip of the bullet crooked. Securely holding the bullet also yields fewer burrs after trimming, which is what we’re trying to eliminate in the first place. Most importantly, our trimmer trims bullets to the same length every time, and that length is easily and controllably adjustable. In the end, our trimmer is head and shoulders above anything else out there.
How do I trim bullets with this trimmer?
For those who are familiar with the excellent Wilson case trimmer, it works the same way. First, the bullet is inserted into the holder. The holder is set in place and pushed back against the stop. While holding the bullet holder, turn the handle until the cutting stops. This won’t take much effort as you’re not removing much material. Lastly, remove the holder and push the bullet out. You can do this in about the time it takes to read this paragraph.
What do I need to get started?
If you already own the Wilson case trimmer, you will need our bullet trimming kit. This will consist of the necessary attachments and one bullet holder for your choice of caliber. Additional holders are available so you can trim additional calibers very economically.
For those who don’t already have a Wilson case trimmer, you will need that. Besides being used for bullet trimming, you will have purchased an excellent case trimmer.
